The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office introduced its newest K-9, Hondo, during a ceremony at the agency’s headquarters in Riverhead on Thursday, March 21.
Sheriff Errol Toulon Jr. presented the 1-year-old German Shepherd with his official shield, and the dog showed off his drug searching and apprehension skills.
Officials said Hondo will assist the agency in detecting drugs, patrolling, searching buildings, and locating missing or wanted people.
The K-9 has already proven his police chops, having tracked down a runaway teenager from the Suffolk County Court complex just weeks after completing his 8-month training.
“We are excited to welcome Hondo as our newest four-legged member of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office,” Toulon said. “We look forward to all the future investigative work he will do to keep our County safe.”
Hondo joins two other deputy sheriff K-9s and three corrections office K-9s.
